11 injured in garbage truck crash in Newton

A garbage truck and a passenger van collided this morning at 116 Highland Ave (near the intersection with Lockwood Rd), sending 11 to the hospital and backing up traffic. One person was trapped in a vehicle when firefighters arrived, and the jaws of life were used to free the patient. A mass casualty incident was declared. Firefighters at the scene report that ambulances transported 9 patients to Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and two to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
