Boat Runs Aground off Boston's North End

Just before 11:00 tonight, US Coast Guard and Boston Fire responded for a sinking boat in the water behind Joe's American Bar, near the intersection of State St and Atlantic Ave. The BFD dive team was also activated and put into the water.
When rescuers reached the boat, they found that it had run aground, but was not taking on water or sinking. The owner and occupants wished to stay on board, likely hoping to be able to float the boat away when the tide changes. Boston Fire Marine Unit was concerned that the people on board would soon be in danger, but because the boat had never made a distress call, the USCG was unable to force them off of the boat. Coast Guard Sector Boston has the phone number of the boat's owner, and will be calling him hourly to ensure he is safe. After the USCG accepted responsibility, BFD cleared from the scene. The BFD divers who entered the water were decontaminated.
